A police officer received a well-deserved promotion that was approved by the Sebewaing Village Council at their last meeting.
Officer Andrew Gokey was promoted to the rank of Sergeant. Awarding the promotion was discussed earlier in the month during a police committee meeting, but was not officially done until the village meeting about two weeks later.
Besides serving as an officer for the village police department, Gokey is the resource officer for the Unionville - Sebewaing Area School District, and he is a previous graduate of the school district as well. As part of his being a resource officer at the school, he is in charge of the service dog "Blue."
In other police matters, approval was given to purchase a replacement vehicle for the 2015 Ford Explorer, but the issue will go back to the police committee to review parameters. The Police Committee forwarded the purchase of a 2008 Crown Victoria for council review; however, Chief Steve Repkie withdrew the request because the vehicle is not ready to be put into service.
The council approved the sale of the Ford Explorer using an auction website with a minimum bid set at $5,000, and to be paid in full within two months of the purchase of the newer police vehicle.
Also over the last few weeks, the offices of the police department have received some donated furnishings from several agencies to improve the working conditions of the officers. And, it was reported the interior of the police office has been painted and new carpeting will be installed soon.
