The Ellington Township Board of Trustees took steps at this month's meeting to control what they can regarding green-energy development in their township ahead of state taking over control.
The board adopted an ordinance to amend the zoning ordinance to regulate utility-scale battery energy storage systems, adopted an ordinance to amend the ordinance regarding special land-use requirements for wind energy conversion systems and solar energy systems.
The changes to the ordinance were to govern the amount of property a commercial energy system can occupy in the township to 10 percent of a given parcel, and to govern the amount of property a commercial solar energy system can occupy to 50 percent of a given parcel.
The board took action in an effort to control what they can before Public Act 233 takes over on Nov. 29 when the Michigan Public Service Commission (MPSC) starts to regulate green-energy development.
In other matters, the board approved an increase in the garbage assessment that is levied. The assessment will increase from $200 a year to $210 a year starting with the December billing.
Also, the board will pay Kappen Tree Service $750 to remove a dead tree that is on village property.
Also approved was a $1,000 payment to be paid to start the repairs on the original part of the township hall that was damaged last fall when the driver of a vehicle lost control and struck the township hall.
As part of that repair project, co-project managers Mike Wilson and Mike Pattullo were approved to oversee the repairs.
Also, the September township planning commission meeting was canceled and rescheduled to be on Dec. 17, at the township hall at 2791 East Caro Rd., Caro.
