The Village of Port Sanilac (VPS) Council is progressing with plans to maintain fire and EMS services efforts through a partnership with Sanilac Township (ST).

In January, the village's negotiating team, Linda Hahn, Trustee, Mike Balysh, Trustee and Jim Sroka; and the Sanilac East Fire Authority (SEFA) Board member, presented a proposal to Sanilac Township for a corporate reorganization of the Sanilac East Fire Authority (SEFA).

The proposal included two main purposes. The first was to ensure fire and EMS services were adequately funded. The second reason was to decrease the amount of friction between the partners in the management of SEFA.

The proposal village developed included capitalizing the corporation, a new management structure, as well as agreements on withdrawal and dissolution, should those be necessary. Since then, the village has met several times with Sanilac Township's representatives, Dan Kelly, Supervisor and Jeff Lyall to mold the proposal into an agreement each group could approve.

In May, the proposal was made available to the boards and councils of all parities. Both the village and the township agreed to send the proposal out for legal review.

The village's attorney is taking the lead and conferring with the township's attorney to break the informal proposal into revised Articles of Incorporation for SEFA, and a separate, formal contract between both the township and village for the funding and management of SEFA. During the process, minor revisions may yet occur, but all groups believe an agreement can be made.

Copies of the tentatively approved Sanilac East Fire Authority proposal can be found on the VPS website, portsanilac.net, or in the VPS offices located at 56 N. Ridge Street, Port Sanilac.
