The Huron County Circuit Court has sentenced Ashley Marie Robinson, 21, to 5 years of probation and 270 days in jail for third-degree child abuse.
The charge stemmed from an incident where her 2 year old twins sustained severe burns to their feet in a bathtub due to lack of supervision and excessive water temperature, requiring debridement (removal of tissue).
Robinson, who has no prior criminal record, pleaded guilty and has since completed four parenting classes, engaged in counseling, and participates in supervised visits with her children through Child Protective Services (CPS).
The defense attorney argued against the 9 month jail recommendation, stating it would hinder Robinson's progress in parenting programs and visits. The court acknowledged the severity of the children's injuries and the importance of parental responsibility.
The sentence includes the 270 days of jail time, with credit for one day served. The first 90 days will be served on weekends, from Friday evening to Monday morning. The remaining jail time is held in abeyance. This structure aims to allow Robinson to continue with parenting services and maintain contact with her children, particularly in light of a companion neglect/abuse case.
Probation conditions include not violating any laws, completing mental health treatment and the "Thinking Matters" program, maintaining employment, and performing 40 hours of community service. Financial penalties include a crime victims assessment, probation supervision fees, court costs, and a fine.
The court warned that any probation violation would result in immediate incarceration.
