Shane Lee Cook Jr. appeared before Judge Prill, in Huron County Circuit Court and received multiple prison sentences for various charges.
Cook, 30, was sentenced for domestic violence third offense, a hate crime, two counts of absconding, tampering with an electronic monitoring device, and resisting and obstructing a police officer.
The defense highlighted Cook's difficult upbringing, including an abusive stepfather and the death of his mother, and requested consideration for anger management treatment.
His wife, June Van Houten, testified to his kind nature and support for her and her family, despite his anger issues.
The prosecution emphasized Cook's record of four prior felonies and four misdemeanors, citing a previous strangulation conviction and concerns for public safety.
The court noted the domestic violence incident involved killing a bird and pushing his wife, the victim, into a stove, and the hate crime included racial threats.
Sentences, to run concurrently, included 4-10 years for one domestic violence charge, 2 1/2-4 years for another, and 2-8 years for absconding.
Additional sentences of 2-15 years were imposed for absconding on bond and resisting a police officer, with 365 days in county jail for tampering with an electronic monitoring device.
Restitution totaling $643.23 was also ordered.
