There were two closed sessions during the last Owendale - Gagetown School District's Board of Education meeting.
One closed session was to do an evaluation of Superintendent Nicholas Huston, and one was regarding student discipline.
The closed session for Huston's evaluation lasted about 8 minutes.
When the board came back to open session, they gave Huston an evaluation of being "effective," which is the highest ranking.
In 2024, the Michigan Department of Education modified the evaluation ranking that had been in place since 2017 for administrators and teachers.
The evaluation ranks are effective, minimal, effective, and ineffective, and instead of having to be evaluated each year, administrators are evaluated every two to three years after three consecutive years of ratings of being effective.
The evaluation process takes into consideration several factors and complicated regulations for the board to use to make their determination on what rank should be given.
The closed session regarding student discipline lasted about an hour before returning to open session.
During the meeting, the board approved tenure for teach Corey Harwood, and voted for James Johnson as a Michigan Association of School Boards (MASB) board director.
