A 1930s-era newsreel was recently discovered by sisters Nancy and Barbara Sleeper of Newberry, whose grandfather, Sanborn Sleeper, was the superintendent of the Luce County Road Commission from 1928 until sometime around World War II. Nancy told us her grandfather was no relation to Albert Sleeper who had been Governor of Michigan, and Sleeper State Park near Caseville is named for. The Sleepers donated the film to MDOT for public display. They had discovered the film when a relative passed away last year and they started to go through old movies and pictures to convert them to a digital format. She noted Sanborn Sleeper was instrumental in the change over in the Upper Peninsula from the use of horse to motrized equipment by the local road commission. You can view the film in the written story on Thumb Net Dot Net.
