OWENDALE-GAGETOWN SCHOOL'S SUPERINTENDENT JIM WENCEL MADE CLEAR THE SCHOOL'S NEED AND EXACTLY HOW A MILLAGE WOULD BE USED IF PASSED TO THOSE WHO ATTENDED A SPECIAL INFORMATIONAL MEETING WEDNESDAY NIGHT. THE SCHOOL IS SEEKING NO MORE THAN $2,990,000 FOR 25 YEARS, OR 2.95 MILLS. HOWEVER WENCEL SAYS BECAUSE WIND TURBINES ARE STILL TAXABLE AS PERSONAL PROPERTY, THEY MAY PAY IT OFF SOONER THAN THAT. AN ITINERARY AT THE MEETING LAID OUT A ROUGH ESTIMATE OF WHAT WILL NEED TO BE DONE TO UPDATE THE SCHOOL AND ABOUT HOW MUCH IT WILL COST. AMONG UPDATES TO THE BUS SYSTEM, TECHNOLOGY, WHITEBOARDS, AND INSTALLATION OF PROJECTOR SCREENS, THE PRINCIPAL LISTED SOME OF THE BIGGER RENOVATIONS SUCH AS REPLACEMENT OF THE SCHOOL'S BOILERS WHICH WERE MADE IN 1966 AND '78, RESEMBLING MORE OF A TRAIN ENGINE THAN A MODERN BOILER...

WENCEL TOLD US IF THE MILLAGE SHOULD PASS, THE SCHOOL WILL GET RIGHT TO WORK RIGHT AWAY HOPING TO BE FINISHED UPDATING THE FACILITIES BY THE BEGINNING OF THE NEXT SCHOOL YEAR. WENCEL MADE NOTE HE INTENDS TO HIRE AS MANY PEOPLE LOCALLY AS POSSIBLE TO DO THE WORK.THE SCHOOL LAST RECEIVED MONEY FROM A MILLAGE IN 1996, HAVING PAID OFF THE MONEY IN 2007. A VOTE WILL BE HELD ON THE MILLAGE PROPOSAL FEBRUARY 26TH. THOSE WHO LIVE IN ELMWOOD TOWNSHIP WILL VOTE ON THE MILLAGE AT ELMWOOD TOWNSHIP HALL, EVERYONE ELSE WILL VOTE AT THE OWENDALE-GAGETOWN AREA SCHOOLS LIBRARY.
