Troopers from the West Branch Post of Michigan State Police were called out Thursday evening on the report of a pedestrian struck by a vehicle in Churchill Township in Ogemaw County. The accident occurred on Gerald Miller Road just south of State Road and was reported at 6:44 Thursday evening. Troopers say a 2010 Ford Fusion was being driven southbound on Gerald Miller Road by a 17 year old female from West Branch when she met an oncoming vehicle traveling northbound. After the northbound vehicle passed by her and she re-engaged her high beams, a pedestrian was encountered in the center of her lane of travel. The driver of the Ford Fusion attempted to avoid the pedestrian but was unable to do so. The area where the crash occurred is a rural roadway and is not lit by streetlights. The pedestrian, a 77 year old West Branch man, sustained serious injuries in the crash; but the driver of the Ford Fusion and a passenger were not hurt. The pedestrian was transported from the scene by Ogemaw County EMS to a local hospital and subsequently airlifted to a downstate hospital for treatment. He is listed in critical condition as of Friday morning. Alcohol does not appear to be a factor. The crash remains under investigation.
