Health officials are concerned about the continuing trend of more than 1,000 new COVID-19 cases per day.

Since the last report from the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) at 3 p.m., yesterday there have been 1,359 more cases of the virus detected for a total of 139,061, and there have been 13 more deaths for a total of 6,941 fatal COVID-19 cases.

In two weeks, from Oct. 1 through today, there have been 14,374 cases of the virus detected. And, 7 out of 14 days, the number of cases have been well over 1,000.

The increase in cases brings concerns a second wave of the virus could be coming.

Between the increase in cases along with heading into the flu season, public health officials are urging increased vigilance and preventative measures.

"Michiganders did a great job of bringing our cases down after a surge in the spring," said Dr. Joneigh Khaldun, MDHHS chief medical executive and chief deputy for health. "Basic things like wearing masks, maintaining a physical distance from others and washing hands worked. With the colder months and flu season coming, we now see a concerning jump in our cases- a trend we can reverse if we all take this seriously and follow best practices to slow the spread of COVID-19."

Plus, there are also 15,394 probable cases of the virus that are being monitored after 234 more were added to be watched. The number of probable deaths to be reviewed remains at 327.

A probable case means there is a possibility a person was exposed to the virus or has possible symptoms of the virus so they are being monitored. A probable death means the death is being studied further to determine if it was COVID-19 caused.
