County jobless rates around Michigan are down over month before, and up over last year. The Michigan Department of Technology, Management and Budget reported that 82 Michigan counties recorded jobless rate declines in May, with the largest percentage point drop seen in Cheboygan County which was down 11.2 percentage points. Wayne County was the only county with a rate advance in May of 6-tenths of a percent. In May Huron County's unemployment rate was at 18.3 percent, the lowest in the upper Thumb, followed by Sanilac County at 22.8, Tuscola County at 23.2 and Lapeer County at 26.6 percent. Over the year, all 83 counties had notable jobless rate hikes. "Regional jobless rates declined in May, but remained at historically high levels," said Jason Palmer, director of the Bureau of Labor Market Information and Strategic Initiatives. "A rebound in jobs occurred in several industries, led by a job gain in construction."
