Now that winter has arrived, the Thumb Animal Shelter reminds pet owners to make sure outside animals are warm with proper shelter.

Proper shelter means with fresh straw, fresh water, and extra food because they burn more calories trying to stay warm.

For those who cannot change the water often, getting a heated water bowl will help.

Make sure the pet house has a lot of clean straw. Straw provides more warmth than blankets.

Another tip from the Thumb Animal Shelter is to make sure the opening of the dog or cat house is turned out of the wind and that it has a flap on the opening that helps the animal warm the area up from their body heat.

And, keep on eye on them. Check them all over, check the skin for pale or bluish/white color. Pay close attention to the ears, tail and feet as these areas are usually some of the first to show signs of frostbite.

If the animal is struggling or may have frostbite or hypothermia call a veterinarian immediately.

If you see an animal struggling or in danger call the police or animal control.

There is straw for sale at 5939 Pigeon Rd., Elkton.
