Due to ongoing weather conditions, roads may not be ideal for driving. Several accidents have already occured in the thumb. If you do have to head out on the roads, take precautions such as allowing for extra travel time, slow down and take your time. Temperatures are also expected to drop below freezing and may bring a dangerous wind chill. Being exposed to, for example, freezing temperatures of 0 degrees Fahrenheit and a wind speed of 15 mph will produce a wind chill temperature of -19 degrees Fahrenheit . Under these conditions, exposed skin can freeze in 30 minutes. Forecasters are now warning people to bundle up because exposed skin could suffer from frostbite in as little as 10 minutes. As another precaution, packing an emergency winter kit for your car may be helpful. Essential items would be winter wear (hats, boots, gloves, etc.), blankets/sleeping bags, hand warmers, ice scraper/snow brush, flashlight and extra batteries (or a hand-crank flashlight), jumper cables, first-aid kit, bottled water, a bag of sand to help with traction (or a bag of non-clumping cat litter), snow shovel, tire chains and tow strap. Again, if you do have to head out, allow for extra travel time and stay safe.
