The north shore of Huron County has been a popular spot for kayakers. Huron County Sheriff Kelly Hanson says that these waters have seen several emergency situations that have included a fatality. Hanson says that kayakers should understand how easy it is to be overtaken by hypothermia with water temperatures only in the 50s. Those kayaking also need to know their physical limits and know what water conditions that their kayak can withstand. A south wind near the shore can leave a false impression that boating conditions are favorable. The waves and currents can increase the further away you are from shore. Hanson says to never go on the water without a properly fitting life jacket. The most common death in a kayak is overturning or falling overboard. The Sheriff's Office also recommends carrying a cell phone in a waterproof container. Also, let someone on land know where you're going and when you'll be back.
