The deadline is approaching for innovators with ideas to reuse or recycle electric vehicle batteries. Applications for NextCycle Michigan's new accelerator program must be submitted by Friday, August 7th.

The initiative, operated through the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy, is seeking projects that help recover valuable materials from large electric vehicle batteries or find new uses for them after their service life. The goal is to strengthen domestic supply chains for critical minerals while reducing battery waste sent to landfills.

The free 6 month accelerator will provide selected teams with technical guidance, business development support, supply chain connections and assistance identifying funding opportunities. Eligible applicants include startups, established businesses, universities, nonprofit organizations, tribal entities and public agencies. Organizers also encourage partnerships with licensed battery processors and manufacturers because of the technical and regulatory requirements involved in handling EV batteries.

Examples of eligible projects include repurposing electric vehicle batteries for portable energy storage, recovering critical minerals through battery dismantling, and developing other technologies that safely collect, reuse or recycle large-format traction batteries. Projects focused only on consumer or small-format batteries are not eligible for this round.

The accelerator begins with a two-day academy in October, continues with virtual coaching through the winter, and concludes with a public showcase in April of next year. Since launching in 2020, NextCycle Michigan has supported more than 170 teams working to expand Michigan's circular economy and reduce landfill waste.
