The Michigan Department of Technology, Management & Budget has released its teen employment forecast for the summer of 2017. They report that the Michigan labor market has continued to improve and this has led to teens having somewhat better success in securing summer employment over the past several years. However, finding jobs is always a challenge for young people. Starting in May, the number of teens entering the labor force increases sharply and reaches a peak in July. Many teens are entering the labor market for the first time and face competition from peers with previous work experience. The Bureau of Labor Statistics says approximately 255,700 teens are projected to look for a job with about 209,700 expected to find employment this Summer. The overall downward trend in the teen unemployment rate of the past several years is anticipated to continue. In recent years, teens have also faced additional competition from adults for available jobs. Consequently, even in the most favorable labor market conditions, these factors result in teen jobless rates that are significantly higher than the rates for adults.
