Those interested in dairy or animal science are invited to spend a few Saturdays in June exploring the fun of dairy cattle. The Thumb Dairy Odyssey is a series of hands-on workshops that are being offered in Huron and Tuscola counties. You don't have to live in those counties to participate. The program teaches youth about the dairy industry, introduces youth to career options in agriculture, and strengthens the skills that are used in FFA and 4-H competitions. Last year's program saw 61 youth participating with 21 parents and 33 community volunteers. The first program for 2017 will be Saturday, June 17th at Visit Paramount Enterprises Dairy in Caro. Those participating will learn the finer points of showmanship and displaying your animal's best traits. On Saturday, June 24th, events will take place on Prime Land Farms in Harbor Beach. Participants will learn how milk is made inside of an udder and how milk is extracted from the udder. The program is designed for those between the ages of 9 and 19. However, all youth are invited to attend. Programs begin at 10 am and will last until 2:30 pm with lunch included. The cost for the children that wish to attend the events are $5 with accompanying adults free. To register, visit the Huron County MSU Extension Office or
