During the upcoming Memorial Day weekend, the Michigan Department of Transportation is removing about 70 percent of lane restrictions on road and bridge projects across the state. The easement of the construction projects will decrease the traffic delays for those that are traveling during the holiday weekend. AAA Michigan is expecting over 1.2 million people from the state to travel at least 50 miles from home. Beginning 3 pm Friday, May 26th, 78 of 111 projects around the state will have lane restrictions removed. Some restrictions, like traffic shifts or shoulder closures, may remain in effect. The construction reduction will last until 6 am Tuesday, May 30th. State Transportation Director Kirk Steudle said, "As we approach Memorial Day and the traditional kickoff to the summer travel season in our beautiful state, it is for good reason that we remind you to keep your eyes on the road. Most construction work will be suspended for the holiday, but in non-holiday times, please pay special attention in work zones." MDOT supervises I, M, and U.S. routes and are responsible for nearly 10,000 miles of state highways that carry over 50 percent of all traffic and 70 percent of commercial traffic in Michigan.
