The two-week long "Click it or Ticket" campaign for the state of Michigan is underway. Officers around the state, including St. Clair County Sheriff's Deputies, will be stepping up efforts to enforce seat belt laws to increase their usage and to save lives. The Michigan State Police Criminal Justice Information Center said that 196 people that were killed in car accidents in 2016 weren't wearing a seatbelt. St. Clair County Sheriff Tim Donnellon said, “While vehicles have increased in safety features, such as air bags, seat belts are still the primary safety device. We will have extra patrols out over the Memorial Day Holiday enforcing the seat belt laws in an effort to reduce serious injuries and deaths to motorists in out county.” Michigan law says that any passengers in the front seat and passengers 15 and younger anywhere in the vehicle must be wearing a seatbelt. Children must be in a car or booster seat until the age of 8 or 4'9" tall. Children under the age of 4 must be in the back seat. The campaign runs through June 4th. Anyone that isn't wearing a seatbelt or isn't wearing one correctly will be issued a citation with a $65 fine.
