HARBOR BEACH SCHOOL BOARD MEETING OF THE WHOLE THIS WEEK

CRAIG ROUTZAHN

Fri, 10 May 2013 10:34:10 EDT

DISCUSSION ON POSSIBLY GETTING A FULL TIME K-8 PRINCIPAL FOR NEXT YEAR WAS PART OF THIS WEEK'S MEETING OF THE WHOLE OF THE HARBOR BEACH SCHOOL BOARD. SUPERINTENDENT LARRY KROSWEK TOLD US THAT HE CURRENTLY SPLITS HIS TIME BETWEEN HIS SUPERINTENDENT DUTIES AND K-8 PRINCIPAL. HE TOLD US THERE IS ENOUGH WORK FOR TWO FULL TIME POSITIONS WITH THOSE JOBS. HE ALSO NOTED THAT NEW TEACHER EVALUATION REQUIREMENTS FROM THE STATE WILL ALSO ADD TO THE WORKLOAD. IT WAS A MEETING OF THE WHOLE AND ONLY IN THE DISCUSSION STAGE AT THIS POINT. THE BOARD IS CURRENTLY WORKING ON NEXT YEAR'S BUDGET AND WILL NEED TO MAKE A DECISION, EITHER FOR OR AGAINST, TO KNOW WHAT TO BUDGET FOR.
KROSWEK TOLD US THAT AS FAR AS THE BUDGET IS CONCERNED THEY HAVE BEEN DOING WELL THE PAST TWO YEARS IN STICKING TO THEIR BUDGET AND MAY PUT AS MUCH AS 500 THOUSAND IN TO FUND BALANCE THIS YEAR. THEY ARE WORKING ON DIFFERENT BUDGET PLANS, ONE WOULD BE BASED ON THE CONTINGENCY OF LOSING 10 TO 15 STUDENTS AND THE STATE FUNDS THAT COME WITH THEM. THE OTHER IS THE DISTRICT HOLDING ITS OWN WITH STUDENT NUMBERS. IF THE NUMBERS LOOK GOOD, THEY WILL LOOK AT REDUCING CLASS SIZES AND INCREASE THEIR COURSE OFFERINGS. THE BOARD TOOK A BREAK IN THE MEETING TO ATTEND THE PRESENTATION OF ACADEMIC LETTERS TO OVER 30 JUNIORS AND SENIORS. THEY ARE SIMILAR TO ATHLETIC LETTERS, BUT ARE BASED ON THE STUDENTS GRADES.
