SANDUSKY COUNCIL MEETING MONDAY

     IF YOU SEE HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS COLLECTING MONEY IN SANDUSKY OVER THE MEMORIAL DAY HOLIDAY WEEKEND IT WILL BE BECAUSE THE SANDUSKY CITY COUNCIL HAS APPROVED, PENDING A COMPLETED APPLICATION, A REQUEST TO COLLECT DONATIONS TO FUND A PROJECT CALLED FOOD 4 FRIENDS. AS A RESULT OF THEIR COLLECTIONS LAST YEAR, THE STUDENTS WERE ABLE TO FEED ABOUT 655 FAMILIES BY BRINGING IN THREE TRUCKLOADS OF FOOD. STUDENTS WILL BE OUT FROM THURSDAY, MAY 23RD TO SATURDAY, MAY 25TH.
     THE SANDUSKY CITY COUNCIL WAS INFORMED BY CITY MANAGER DAVID FABER THAT, AS A RESULT OF MEETINGS WITH DETROIT EDISON, TALKS OF MOVING A UTILITY POLE THAT WAS IN AN “UNSAFE AREA” OF THE ARGYLE STREET ROAD PROJECT HAVE RESULTED IN THE ENERGY COMPANY BEING WILLING TO MOVE THE POLE AT THEIR EXPENSE, WHICH SAVES THE CITY APPROXIMATELY $10,000. THE CITY WAS ALSO AWARDED A TREE GRANT FROM DETROIT EDISON IN THE AMOUNT OF $3,000 TO PLANT TREES IN THE FALL.
      FABER ALSO MENTIONED THAT $500 IS BEING DONATED BY THE SANDUSKY CHAMBER OF COMMERCE TO ADD BANNERS IN THE DOWNTOWN AREA OF SANDUSKY. AN APPLICATION HAS BEEN FILLED OUT FOR A GRANT WITH THE COMMUNITY FOUNDATION TO ADD MORE BANNERS FOR THE BEAUTIFICATION OF THE AREA. SOME BUSINESSES WILL BE SPONSORING THEIR OWN, AS WELL. FLOWERS BEING PLANTED NEXT WEEK WILL ALSO ADD TO THE IMPROVEMENTS.
     THE CITY MANAGER NOTED THAT THERE ARE TWO POSITIONS OPEN WITH THE CITY. THE DEADLINE TO APPLY FOR THE POSITIONS IS FRIDAY, MAY 10TH BY 3PM. AS OF THE MEETING THERE WAS ONLY ONE APPLICANT FOR EACH POSITION. THE LISTINGS ARE AVAILABLE ONLINE AND THOSE WISHING TO APPLY NEED TO PICK UP THE APPLICATION AND JOB DESCRIPTION AT THE SANDUSKY CITY HALL.
      APPROVAL WAS ALSO GIVEN BY THE CITY COUNCIL FOR THE CITY MANAGER TO PROCEED WITH THE BIDDING PROCESS FOR REMOVAL OF TREES IN TWO CITY PARK AREAS. FABER WILL HAVE THE AUTHORITY TO APPROVE A BID NOT EXCEEDING $20,000 WITH THE OPTION OF STUMP REMOVAL. THERE ARE A TOTAL OF 32 TREES THAT NEED TO COME DOWN.
      COUNCIL MEMBERS MADE SURE TO MENTION OTHER UPCOMING EVENTS. THESE WILL INCLUDE A WEEKLY FARMERS’ MARKET ON THE WEST SIDE OF THE COUNTY LAWN ON THURSDAYS FROM 2PM TO 6PM BEGINNING THIS WEEK AND SATURDAY WILL BE THE KICK-OFF DAY FOR THE SUMMER BASEBALL AND SOFTBALL ASSOCIATION. THE LINE-UP AND PARADE WILL BEGIN AT 9AM WITH OPENING CEREMONIES TAKING PLACE AT 10AM.
