WHEN SHE WAS IN HIGH SCHOOL, MANY WOULD HAVE THOUGHT THAT SARA SCHWEITZER, DAUGHTER OF DALE AND JUNE SCHWEITZER OF LINKVILLE, WAS GOING TO BE AN ACTRESS IN THEATER. ALL THAT CHANGED AROUND CHRISTMAS TIME 2012 WHEN SARA ANNOUNCED SHE HAD DECIDED TO JOIN THE MILITARY. AFTER CONVERSATIONS WITH HER FRIEND ELLEN, WHO LEAVES ON MAY 6TH FOR THE AIR FORCE, SARA DECIDED THAT SHE WOULD SERVE HER COUNTRY BY JOINING THE UNITED STATES AIR FORCE.
SARA SAYS THAT AFTER GOING TO COLLEGE TO GET GENERAL EDUCATION CREDITS OUT OF THE WAY, SHE STILL COULDN’T DECIDE WHAT SHE WANTED TO DO WITH HER LIFE. SHE SAID THAT SHE’S ALWAYS LOVED A GOOD CHALLENGE AND THAT SHE, “WANTED TO PROTECT AND SERVE THE ONES I LOVE.” SO, SHE TALKED TO A RECRUITER AND BEGAN THE PROCESS. SHE WILL LEAVE MICHIGAN ON MAY 20, 2013 BOUND FOR LACKLAND AIR FORCE BASE IN SAN ANTONIO, TX FOR BASIC TRAINING.
HURON COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSION CHAIRMAN, CLARK ELFTMAN, ATTENDED A GOING AWAY PARTY FOR SCHWEITZER ON SUNDAY AFTERNOON. DURING THE PARTY, COMMISSIONER ELFTMAN SAID IT WAS HIS HONOR TO LOAN SARA HIS COPY OF “A BOOK OF PRAYERS FOR THE ARMED FORCES,” WHICH HE RECEIVED WHILE SERVING IN THE ARMY FROM 1960-1969. HE ALSO HAD A SPECIAL PRAYER FOR HER SAYING, “WE PRAY FOR SARA AND THOUSANDS LIKE HER WHO RISE TO THE CHALLENGE THAT THIS COUNTRY, THIS FLAG, AND OUR WAY OF LIFE WILL BE PROTECTED. HELP HER TO LEARN WHY SO MANY HAVE SERVED BEFORE HER. HELP HER TO LEARN THAT THIS COUNTRY IS THE HOPE OF THE FREE WORLD. PROTECT AND CARE FOR SARA AS SHE PROTECTS AND CARES FOR US. LET THE GREATNESS OF OF GOD AND THE GOODNESS OF GOD SHOW THROUGH HER. AMEN.” “THERE IS NO HIGHER CALLING, I DON’T THINK THAN TO BE CALLED A VETERAN. TAKE PRIDE IN WHAT YOU’RE GOING TO DO,” SAID ELFTMAN. “THIS IS GOING TO BE ONE OF THE BIGGEST ADVENTURES OF YOUR LIFE. AND THIS LITTLE THING HERE WITH RED, WHITE AND BLUE IS GOING TO MEAN MORE TO YOU THAN IT EVER HAS.”
AN EMOTIONAL YOUNG LADY STOOD BEFORE FRIENDS AND FAMILY AFTER THE PRESENTATION AND COMMENTED, “I LOVE YOU GUYS SO MUCH AND THAT’S WHY I’M SERVING. TO PROTECT YOU GUYS.” SCHWEITZER LATER SAID THAT SHE’S ALWAYS BEEN PROTECTIVE OF HER FAMILY. A TRAIT WHICH HER MOM SAID COMES FROM BEING THE ELDEST OF THREE SIBLINGS. “I’VE TRIED TO TEACH MY DAUGHTERS TO BE STRONG, INDEPENDENT, AND TO LIVE THEIR LIVES FIRST,” SAID JUNE SCHWEITZER.
THE SCHWEITZER FAMILY HAS A HISTORY OF MILITARY SERVICE. SARA HAD A MATERNAL GRANDFATHER THAT SERVED IN THE ARMY, A PATERNAL UNCLE THAT SERVED, AS WELL AS A 3RD COUSIN THAT IS CURRENTLY SERVING IN THE MARINE CORPS, WHO EARNED A PURPLE HEART IN AN I.E.D. EXPLOSION IN AFGHANISTAN.
ALSO ANTICIPATED TO SPEAK AT THE GOING AWAY PARTY WAS STATE SENATOR MIKE GREEN WHO WAS UNABLE TO ATTEND.
