A 42 YEAR OLD HEMLOCK WOMAN WAS PULLED FROM THE COLD WATERS OF SAGINAW BAY SATURDAY MORNING AFTER HER 10 FOOT SAILBOAT CAPSIZED. HURON COUNTY SHERIFFS DEPUTIES SAY A NEIGHBOR CALLED IN AT ABOUT 9:50 SATURDAY MORNING REPORTING THAT A WOMAN WAS A HALF MILE OFF SHORE OF 6072 PORT AUSTIN ROAD IN CASEVILLE TOWNSHIP IN THE WATER. ROAD OFFICERS RESPONDED TO THE SCENE ON SHORE WHILE OTHERS HEADED OUT IN THE SHERIFFS DEPARTMENT AIR BOAT. THE AIRBOAT ARRIVED AT ABOUT 10:20AM. PHYLLIS J. MEEK OF HEMLOCK WAS WEARING A LIFE JACKET AND A FRIEND IN A KAYAK WAS TRYING TO TOW MEEK AND THE SAILBOAT IN TO SHORE. THE WOMAN WAS PULLED FROM THE WATER BY DEPUTIES AS SHE WAS UNABLE TO HOLD ON TO THE KAYAK BECAUSE OF HYPOTHERMIA SETTING IN.   SHE WAS PLACED IN HYPOTHERMIC RESCUE GEAR AND TAKEN TO THE CASEVILLE HARBOR TO RENDEZVOUS WITH A WAITING AMBULANCE. SHE WAS TAKEN TO SCHEURER HOSPITAL OF PIGEON FOR TREATMENT. THE HARBOR BEACH COAST GUARD CREW MEMBERS EVENTUALLY RECOVERED THE SAIL BOAT. HURON COUNTY SHERIFF KELLY HANSON WANTED TO STRESS THAT EXTRA CAUTION IS NEEDED AT THIS TIME OF YEAR. EVEN THOUGH AIR TEMPERATURES WERE IN THE 60'S SATURDAY MORNING, HE BELIEVED THE WATER WOULDN'T EVEN BE IN THE 50'S YET. THE VICTIM HAD LOST HER ABILITY TO HOLD ON TO THE KAYAK AND HAD BECOME HYPOTHERMIC AFTER BEING IN THE WATER ONLY A LITTLE OVER 30 MINUTES.
