During a Unionville Village Council meeting, it was announced the ACW-Unionville Fire Department received a grant for some equipment.
"The fire department received the FEMA Regional Assistance to Fire Fighters Grant for new SCBA (Self-contained breathing apparatus - air packs)," explained Unionville Village Clerk Jessica VanHove. "The grant was (filed) in conjunction with Sebewaing, Gagetown, and Pigeon fire departments and 5 percent will be matched."
The total amount of the FEMA Regional Assistance to Fire Fighters Grant was for $470,762.
"Our portion of the grant is $107,100. I'm not sure of the breakdown for the other three communities," said ACW-Unionville Fire Chief Nick Sakon.
The awarding of the funding shows there is power in numbers.
"We applied as a Regional Community Grant to increase our odds at obtaining the grant," explained Sakon. "We had a better chance to receive it as a regional grant than if all four departments applied separately."
"By doing it as a regional application, we also lower our cost share portion of the equipment."
FEMA's (Federal Emergency Management Agency) primary goal of the AFG is to enhance the safety of the public and firefighters with respect to fire-related hazards by providing direct financial assistance to eligible fire departments, nonaffiliated Emergency Medical Services organizations, and State Fire Training Academies.
This funding is for critically needed resources to equip and train emergency personnel to recognized standards, enhance operations efficiencies, foster interoperability, and support community resilience.
The ACW-Unionville Fire Department provides fire services to the the Akron, Columbia, Wisner Townships and the Village of Unionville.
