Lapeer hosting information meeting on vaping Dec. 12

Because the number of vaping related illnesses and deaths continue to increase, there will be an informational meeting in Lapeer next week on the issue. The free informational meeting, "What is an E-Cig?" Will be 6 to 7:30, Thursday, Dec. 12 at the PIX Theatre in downtown Lapeer. In a collaboration between the Lapeer County Health Department - Alcohol Information and Counseling Center (AICC), the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, and Families Against Narcotics (FAN) will be hosting the program. The seminar is presented by the Tobacco Section of the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services. Topics for the evening include a description of how electronic cigarettes operate and how to be able to visually identify them as well as the public health consequences, safety and health concerns of e-cigarettes. Presenters will explain why youth are drawn to using these products and describe the overall "e-cigarette climate" throughout the state of Michigan. Although Michigan banned the sale of flavored vape products in October, that was reversed via temporary injunction issued by the Michigan Court of Claims. However, health officials still view vaping as a danger to adults and youth alike. Most of that danger is a result from incomplete information or misinformation, which is why the informational program is being presented. Last week, the Michigan State Health Department announced a second person has died in the state due to a vape-related lung injury.
