The Cass River Levee Improvement Project is progressing. In March, Scott's Tree Service started cutting down trees to clear the way for the project, which will go from the fishermen's parking Lot on Gunzenhausen and Rosstal streets, go south on Gunther, to the Main Street Bridge, the Frankenmuth River Place shops, the pedestrian bridge and Holzbruecke on north behind the Bavarian Inn Restaurant and a ways beyond was the way the project was explained. The Federal Emergency Management Administration (FEMA) necessitated the project. City officials have been working with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the department of Environmental Quality, and the Michigan Department of Transprotation on the project. Rohde Brothers Excavating of Saginaw is doing the work and the city's DPW is helping where they can. The plan is to have the work completed in the fall of 2020. And, the project will save and include a piece of the community's business history. The water wheel that was used by the former Nickless and Hubinger Flour Mill has been preserved and is being moved to where it can be seen even though it is not operational.
