The Bad Axe School District's Board of Education approved accepting more students and the regulations for sports during the next academic school year during Monday's meeting.
Under the Schools of Choice participation provision, the board approved accepting unlimited openings for the 2026-2027 school year.
Michigan's school of choice policy began in 1994 as part of the Proposal A change in school finance. It allowed school districts the option of allowing students from other schools to enroll in their school, and it also allowed the creation of charter schools.
Schools of Choice allow for the opportunity for a child to move from one school to another.
However, it is up to each district if they want to participate in the program, and a district can also select how many and in what grades new students will be accepted.
During the meeting, the board approved adopting the annual Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) resolution for the high school for the next school year.
MHSAA is the governing body that regulates and organizes interscholastic sports and postseason tournaments for junior high and high schools across the state of Michigan.
In other matters, the resignation of Alayna Knarian as the middle school physical education teacher was accepted with regret, and a presentation of the requirements and guidance in regard to the Behavior Threat and Assessment Management regulations for schools.
