The Sanilac County Historical Society (SCHS) is pleased to announce they have been awarded a Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loan in the amount of $11,343.75. The SCHS received their federal loan check within days of filing the application, thanks to Patty Alexander and the team at Exchange State Bank. This new round of PPP loans offer a "second draw" for harder-hit non-profits that received PPP funding in 2020. The funds can be applied to payroll, utilities, and various other expenses. When used properly, for designated expenses only, the loan converts to a grant and nothing needs be repaid. The SCHS was awarded a PPP loan in 2020 that converted to a grant, and that loan was fully forgiven. Bill Gray, president of the SCHS, said the loan/grant will allow the Society to cover basic costs and help keep staff employed for several months. Gray went on to say, "We are very grateful for this aid, but we're also worried about what comes next. Ten weeks of aid really is not enough. Our general operating budget is typically supported by grants, donations, memberships, and in large part, revenue from events/fundraisers. But the possibility of hosting many of our usual events and fundraisers is still in question for 2021. The Historical Society is important to our county and I'm certain we will thrive again. But what comes next is still pretty uncertain for us.
