Because October is National Fire Prevention Awareness Month, and Oct. 6 to the 12 is Fire Prevention Week, some fire departments will host open houses along with promoting fire safety awareness. Observing Fire Prevention week is done in commemoration of the Chicago Fire, which happened Oct. 8, 1871. That fire killed more than 250 people, left 100,000 homeless, and burned several thousand acres. On the 40th anniversary of the Chicago Fire, the Fire Marshalls Association sponsored the first National Fire Prevention Day. That was done as a way for the public to be reminded about the importance of fire prevention and safety. In 1925, President Calvin Coolidge proclaimed the first National Fire Prevention Week. Some of the events for fire prevention awareness include: The Burlington Township Fire Department's open house from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 12. There will be free hot dogs and drinks. There will be demonstrations, games, face paintings, green address signs made on-site and Smokey the Bear is scheduled to make an appearance. The Metamora Township Fire Department's open house will be 10 a.m. to noon, Saturday, Oct. 12. The event will include fire truck rides, kids' activities, and free hot dogs. And, the Lapeer City Fire and Rescue Department will host an open house from noon to 3 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 13.
