Harbor Beach Fire Chief Jason Lermont told us that now is a good time to think about fire safety, as this is National Fire prevention Week. The Theme this year is to "Know 2 ways out of the house". He told us that if your door is shut and you smell smoke or hear the fire alarm check the door to see if it's hot, and if it is try another way out like a window. He told us that 85 percent of the house fires in Huron County last year, found the home did not have a working smoke detector. He also noted that smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors have usually about a 4 year life span, before they should be replaced. With the recent house explosion in the Harbor Beach area where a life was lost due to a propane leak, he said there are alarms that also can detect natural gas and propane leaks in the house. The fire department has been taking its safety trailer that simulates a smoke and a fire to schools in the area, to give the kids first had experience on how to safely get out if there is a fire.
