On Oct. 10, GRIT will be presented to Cass City students and community by former University of Michigan basketball player Austin Hatch. The assembly will be being at 9:15 a.m. and will conclude about 11 a.m. According to Superintendent Jeff Hartel, Austin's story has been shown on ESPN and many other media outlets over the past few years. Austin, who survived two plane crashes that resulted in the loss of many members of his family, has a message of overcoming adversity and showing GRIT. GRIT is an acronym Hatch developed from overcoming injuries suffered in the second of two plane crashes and is his key to overcome any form of adversity we face in life. The following are his components of GRIT that he uses, and say can be use in any critical role to "achieve any goal." First and foremost, GRIT is driven by having a greater purpose for why we do what we do. If we are working just for ourselves, it is likely that life will present us with adversity that will cause us to quit because we dont have a driving force for why we do what we do," Hatch explained. "If we are working for something bigger than ourselves, we will always do what it takes to get the job done, no matter the task. "We will not only find a way to overcome the adversity, but we will also find a way to get better because of it. Our purpose drives GRIT."
Hatchs four components to GRIT are:
- Growth Mindset - which views adversity as opportunity. We can find a way grow from anything we experience in life.
- Resilience - what happens to us is never as important as how we respond. We are not the product of our circumstances; we are the product of how we choose to respond.
- Integrity - in the context of overcoming adversity or working to achieve any goal, for that matter, I think Integrity is about following through on our commitments and doing what we said we would do, especially when our circumstances change.
- Team First mentality, We should always think about the team first. We should train ourselves to think WE before me. Sometimes we'll just have to do things because it's what the team needs.
"The goal of my message is to give the audience perspective and to hopefully encourage them to think about adversity and opposition a little differently" said Hatch. "I use stories from my experiences, both from my road to recovery as well as from my time on the basketball team at Michigan to support each component of GRIT." There is a cost to brining this empowering program so donating sponsors are needed. For more information about helping to sponsor this event that is open to the entire Cass City community, call (989) 912-1821. Austin will be in the building around 8:30 a.m. to visit with students in classrooms and will hang around after the assembly for anyone to visit personally with him. The entire Cass City community is welcome to attend and listen to his message.
