Progress is being made on the construction of a senior center in Sanilac County.

In late May, there was a groundbreaking ceremony for The Heartlands Senior Living Complex in Marlette.

The $11.2 Million complex is being constructed on a former golf course in Marlette on the east side of Main Street (M-53) and is across the street from the Marlette Regional Hospital.

United Healthcare bought 97 acres from the owners of the former golf course in November 2019, of which 47 acres will be developed for the senior living community, and the remaining 50 acres designated for future development.

The center is a joint effort by the United Healthcare Partners of Marlette and Deckerville hospitals.

If all goes as planned, the facility will be completed in the spring of 2022.

The Heartlands project will offer services and amenities that will allow residents to comfortably age in place as well as having convenient access to clinical care.

Also, the senior center will offer a variety of living options to meet seniors' needs. The facility will include 20 standalone spacious units, independent living villas with attached garages.

Plus, it will have 20 assisted living and 12 memory-care apartments for those residents who require some additional support services and care.

In addition, The Heartland complete will have a 4,596-square-foot community center that will be available for public use.

It will include a large meeting room, a dining room capable of seating 100 people, a kitchenette, a media area, an exercise room, bathrooms, exam and offices as well as an outside dining area.

The public can view the project of the center on the Website, for updates about the development.

A unique aspect of the website is that it allows for inquiries to be made online, and will be responded to.
