The COVID pandemic has taken a toll one way or another on nearly every aspect of life including finances. Among those with financial issues from the virus is Sanilac County, which prompted commissioners to issue a resolution ordering belt tightening. "Given the severity of the fiscal challenge currently confronting Sanilac County due to the COVID-19 pandemic, all departments and offices, and all services budgeted by the county must restrict all discretionary spending and continue to aggressively implement cost containment strategies, including the identification and implementation of administrative efficiencies and economic generated by budgetary savings," reads the resolution noting budget discretionary expense line items will be reduced. The directive includes all non-essential contracts, purchases, travel, and training. However, the directive does not include COVID-19 response activities through emergency management for emergencies. It also does not include state or federal mandated activities, or activities related to protecting health, safety or welfare of residents. The resolution also notes that it is prohibited from: hiring employees, creating new positions, filling new or existing vacant positions, transfering, recall or promotion between county departments or offices, or internal promotions within a department or office. However, commissioners or the controller - administrative may grant exceptions to the suspensions. In other pandemic related issues, commissioners authorized the suspension of the county's COVID preparedness response plan. Over the last few months, the number of cases and deaths from the virus have significantly decreased.
