After several rain delays, laying the foundation for an addition to the Columbia Township Library is underway. The library at 6456 Center Street, Unionville, is in the process of doing a 4,370 foot addition using the vacant lot on the North side of the library as well as doing renovations to some areas to the inside of the library. The estimated cost of the project is $1,176,563. The renovation and expansion will allow for a dedicated children's area, space for the library's collection to expand, and an entertainment area that is like a living room that will be open to all and can serve as a hub for community activities. Renovations will also allow the township to have a dedicated office area and more room to hold elections. And, there will be an area that can be rented for parties, seminars, classes, and other events. The Columbia Township Library provides services to all residents living in Columbia, Akron, and Wisner Townships as well as for those who live within the Unionville-Sebewaing Area School District, which extends into Huron County. The library has come a long way from its inception. The first library in Unionville was started by the Unionville Woman's Club in 1952 in an upstairs room at the American Legion Hall. It was privately operated by the club. In 1966 a member of the Tuscola County Library Board discuss the possibility and procedures for establishing a township library. The following year doing that was approved. A one-room country school house was moved to town and converted to a kindergarten room at the Unionville School. When it stopped being used as a school, the library board bought it to use as a library. The Columbia Township Library officially opened July 8, 1967. The former school building/library was moved across the road on August 15, 1968, on Merry Street. In 2005 the library moved to its present location in a former doctor's office. At that location, there was space for a community room, a computer lab, and room to expand the library's holdings. That was made possible with the help of a local business which wrote a grant to USDA Rural Development to provide Internet access for people who did not have it or were under served. And, funds from the Robert C. Reinhardt Trust in 2010, allowed the library to be automated.
