The unusually warm winter we have been experiencing can be seen by the ice coverage on the Great Lakes this year. As of Thursday the Great Lakes had ice coverage of just 13.3 percent, that compares with 27.5 percent last year and 88.4 percent at this time in 2014. These conditions of plenty of open water, gives the lakes the opportunity to generate wave action from winds that can impact what's left of the shore ice. It makes conditions volatile and can change from day to day because of the weather and wind directions. Anyone venturing out onto the ice should use extreme caution, keep an eye out for changing conditions and listen for cracking ice that may mean the part your on is coming loose from your way back to shore. Some images from the NOAA (noah) Coastwatch can be found in the pictures tot he right and below.
