More coyote sightings are being reported.

At about 3 a.m. on Sept. 12 a Sandusky Police Officer observed a large coyote in the neighborhood near Bridgehampton and Maple Valley streets. It ran across to the Diamond Trail Park towards the woods.

Although coyotes are common in the area Sandusky, it's not often they are seen running through residential areas.

Coyotes are considered part of the dog family. It is smaller than a wolf. A coyote stands about 24 inches tall at the shoulder and weighs between 20 to 50 pounds, and it can run about 40 mph.

They are primarily a nocturnal animal that is an efficient hunter with a keen sense of smell.

They are capable of bringing down a deer, and in the fall and winter they hunt in packs. They also have been known to feed on pets.

The Sandusky Police urges residents to keep an eye on small pets that are let outside.

Also, Fairgrove Village residents have reported coyotes in the community for more than a year, and some pets have gone missing.
