The 2020 United States' census is underway, but the deadline to be counted is fast approaching.
The census count of residents has been extended until Sept. 30.
Participating in the census is important for communities.
Each person counted amounts to $1,800 in revenue for their local community for each of the next 10 years.
Also, the data collected by the census determine the number of seats each state has in the U.S. House of Representatives (a process called apportionment) and is also used to distribute billions in federal funds to local communities.
The census consists of some basic questions like: income, the number and age of children in families, and health insurance status to help communities enroll eligible families in programs designed to assist them.
Income data determines eligibility and funding in programs like Medicaid, the Child and Adult Care Food Program, and Head Start.
