Peak Season for car deer crashes is approaching and the Tuscola County Sheriffs Office would like to remind everyone of a few tips to avoid hitting deer. When approaching a deer on the roadway, slow down and blow your horn with one long blast to scare the deer away. Brake firmly but stay in your lane and DO NOT swerve to avoid the deer. Most serious crashes happen when motorists swerve to avoid the deer but end up hitting another vehicle or losing control of their own. The Tuscola County Sheriffs Office reports that they have already responded to more deer crashes in 2019 so far than all of 2018. In 2018, there were 211 car crashes involving deer, and so far in 2019, there have already been 350. Always be aware when behind the wheel and always wear your seatbelts.
