When looking for a place to play shuffleboard with people of all skill levels, one only needs to hang out near the fairgrounds in Caro on Mondays and Wednesdays throughout the summer. On Wednesday, the Caro Shuffleboard club played their last tournament of the 2015 season in memory of David L. Bockstanz.

People from all over mid-Michigan travel to Caro for the tournaments. The group has members from Tuscola, Lapeer, Sanilac, Genesee, Shiawasee, Huron, Saginaw, St. Clair and Oakland Counties. Members of the club also range from beginners to Hall of Fame members.

Hall of Fame member and professional shuffleboard player Shirley McCullough of Owosso plays in Caro, but competes around the world. She is scheduled to play in an international tournament in Florida this year, but has also played in Germany and Australia. Other professional club members in Caro include Don Rood of St. Clair and Dwayne Cross of Flint.

The group also boasts several players at the State Amateur level, including their current president, Tom Putnam of Kingston, and his wife Cheryl, who acts as the club's vice president. Judy Cross from Flint also plays at this level.

Club Vice President Cheryl Putnam and tournament director Brenda Dawson encourage anyone of any age and skill level to participate. "We've had four generation out on some nights," said Putnam. The club also accepts sponsorships for weekly tournaments and the State qualifying tournament in June.

The Caro Shuffleboard Club begins weekly tournaments on the last Wednesday of May and plays to the end of September. When the 2016 season gets started, anyone intersted in joining can take part in Monday practices. A statewide tournament will be held in Caro in June.
