ON TUESDAY, 37 PARENTS AND STUDENTS BRAVED THE COLD WEATHER TO ATTEND FAMILY ENGINEERING NIGHT AT CROSS LUTHERAN SCHOOL IN PIGEON. FAMILY ENGINEERING IS AN INFORMAL ENGINEERING EDUCATION PROGRAM THAT ACTIVELY ENGAGES ELEMENTARY-AGED CHILDREN AND THEIR FAMILIES IN FUN, HANDS-ON ENGINEERING ACTIVITIES. SCOTT WHIPPLE AND JENNY TRUSOCK FROM HURON INTERMEDIATE SCHOOL DISTRICT BROUGHT TWO GROUP AND 20 INDIVIDUAL ACTIVITIES TO CHALLENGE THOSE ATTENDING. THE CROSS SCHOOLS GYM AND CAFETERIA WERE FILLED WITH AN ARRAY OF HANDS ON EXPERIMENTS.

THIS IS THE SECOND TIME CROSS LUTHERAN SCHOOL HAS HOSTED THE POPULAR EVENT. GWYNNE BARRY, 3RD-5TH GRADE TEACHER SAID, WE WANT TO ENGAGE FAMILIES IN ENRICHING ACTIVITIES, AND EXPOSE THEM TO HOW SCIENCE AND MATH ARE IMPORTANT NOW AND IN THE FUTURE FOR THEIR CHILDREN.

AMONG THE ACTIVITIES, STUDENTS EXAMINED DIFFERENT KINDS OF SHOES AND HOW THEY WERE CONSTRUCTED FOR SPECIFIC PURPOSES. THEY ALSO WERE CHALLENGED TO BUILD FREE STANDING TOWERS AND MAKE A LAUNCHER OUT OF SIMPLE MATERIALS.
