TOURNAMENT OF CHAMPIONS

THE THUMB AREA QUIZ BOWL LEAGUE HELD ITS ANNUAL TOURNAMENT OF CHAMPIONS LAST THURSDAY TO WRAP UP THE WINTER 2014 HIGH SCHOOL LEAGUE FOR THE SEASON.   WHILE OTHER QUIZ BOWL TOURNAMENTS FEATURE TEAMS OF FOUR COMPETING TO BUZZ IN AND BE THE FIRST TO CORRECTLY ANSWER ACADEMIC QUESTIONS FOR POINTS, THE TOURNAMENT OF CHAMPIONS INVOLVES STUDENTS “PLAYING FOR THEMSELVES.”   

PRIOR TO THE COMPETITION, ALL 120 STUDENTS IN THE LEAGUE TOOK PRE-TESTS WHICH WERE USED TO SELECT THE TOP STUDENTS IN EACH AREA. ACADEMIC AREAS INCLUDED MATH, SCIENCE, LANGUAGE ARTS, SOCIAL STUDIES, CURRENT EVENTS, TECHNOLOGY AND THE ARTS. STUDENTS' COMPOSITE SCORE ON THE SUBJECT-AREA TEST WERE ALSO USED TO QUALIFY A STUDENT FOR GRADE-LEVEL COMPETITIONS. THE COMPETITION ITSELF PITTED 14 OF THE THUMB AREAS TOP STUDENTS IN EACH AREA. GOLD, SILVER AND BRONZE TROPHIES WERE AWARDED, AS WELL AS MEDALS FOR THE TOP FIVE OVERALL STUDENTS WITH THE TITLE OF “CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS GOING TO THE BEST OF THE BEST.

TWO NEW CATEGORIES WERE INTRODUCED THIS YEAR; THE ARTS AND TECHNOLOGY. IN THE ARTS COMPETITION, IT WAS MARLETTE JUNIOR BRITTANY HASKINS TAKING GOLD WITH WILLIAM JOHNSON/LAKERS TAKING 2ND AND ADAM KRAUSE/MARLETTE GETTING BRONZE. QUESTIONS IN THE ARTS WERE FROM THE AREAS OF ART, DANCE, AND THEATER.

BEN BOVEN, A JUNIOR FROM BROWN CITY WAS 1ST PLACE IN TECHNOLOGY WITH ADAM KRAUSE/MARLETTE IN 2ND AND JACK NORTON/SANDUSKY IN THIRD. TECHNOLOGY QUESTIONS WERE FROM THE FIELD OF COMPUTERS, AS WELL AS OTHER ASPECTS OF MODERN TECH.

ADAM KRAUSE, A SENIOR AT MARLETTE, TOOK GOLD IN LANGUAGE ARTS WITH DAVID DOERR OF BAD AXE GETTING SILVER. BEN BOVEN/BROWN CITY PLACED THIRD FOR BRONZE. SENIOR ANDREW NG FROM BAD ACE NARROWLY DEFEATED BRITTANY HASKINS IN OVERTIME FOR GOLD IN SCIENCE. ADAM KRAUSE/MARLETTE TOOK BRONZE IN SCIENCE. A SOPHOMORE FROM SANDUSKY, TATE LARSON, PLACED FIRST IN MATCH FOR GOLD WITH MICHAEL GASCON/BAD AXE IN 2ND AND DEVON ROBBINS/BROWN CITY IN 3RD PLACE.

THE WINNER IN SOCIAL STUDIES WAS CHRIS BLATT, A JUNIOR AT MARLETTE WITH JACOB AYMEN/BAD AXE TAKING SILVER AND ANDREW NG/BAD AXE BEING AWARDED BRONZE. TATE LARSON/SANDUSKY WAS THE GOLD MEDALIST IN CURRENT EVENTS WITH ANTHONY WILCOX/BROWN CITY TALKING SILVER AND COLLIN BLATT/MARLETTE EARNING BRONZE.

IN THE GRADE-LEVEL COMPETITIONS, IT WAS MARLETTE SENIOR ADAM KRAUSE TAKING GOLD; BAD AXE'S JOSHUA SHEPPARD TAKING SILVER AND FELLOW TEAMMATE ANDREW NG WINNING THE BRONZE. DAVID DOERR OF BAD AXE WAS THE GOLD MEDALIST FOR THE CLASS OF 2015, WITH MARLETTE'S BLATT BROTHERS, COLLIN AND CHRIS, TAKING SILVER AND BRONZE IN THE JUNIOR COMPETITION. TATE LARSON OF SANDUSKY WAS THE TOP SOPHOMORE WHILE ABIGAIL LORENCZ/BAD AXE AND SHANNON PARTICKA/UBLY TOOK SILVER AND BRONZE HOME. GRANT SHERIDAN/SANDUSKY WAS THE FRESHMAN GOLD MEDALIST WITH BAD AXE'S COLLIN MARTIN TAKING SILVER AND BROWN CITY'S CECILIA LINCK WINNING BRONZE.

TWO OF THE LEAGUE'S HIGH SCHOOLS, BAD AXE & MARLETTE, HAD THE PLEASURE OF HAVING INTERNATIONAL EXCHANGE STUDENTS ON THEIR SQUADS THIS SEASON. THE INTERNATIONAL ROUND FEATURED ANNA EMILIA/BAD AXE FROM BRAZIL AND SYLVIA CONFORTO/MARLETTE FROM ITALY (SICILY).THE GIRLS HAD TO TRY AND BE THE FIRST TO BUZZ IN ON QUESTIONS RELATED TO THEIR HOME COUNTRY. TO THEIR CREDIT, BOTH GIRLS “STOLE” QUESTIONS FROM THE OTHERS A TIME OR TWO. HOWEVER, THE FINAL QUESTION WAS ON MICHIGAN. THE QUESTION WAS, “IF PEOPLE FROM BRAZIL ARE BRAZILIANS AND PEOPLE FROM ITALY ARE ITALIANS, WHAT ARE PEOPLE FROM MICHIGAN COMMONLY CALLED?” SYLVIA WAS THE FIRST TO COME UP WITH THE CORRECT ANSWER: “MICHIGANIANS.”   OF COURSE, “MICHIGANDERS” WOULD HAVE ALSO BEEN ACCEPTED.

ALONG WITH THE AWARDING OF TROPHIES, THE FINAL EVENT OF THE TOURNAMENT OF CHAMPIONS INVOLVED THE ANNOUNCING OF THE 5 FINALISTS AND THE CHAMPION-OF CHAMPIONSM FOR THE COMPETITION. ANDREW NG/BAD AXE, DAVID DOERR/BAD AXE AND BRITTANY HASKINS/MARLETTE CAME IN THIRD (TIE) FOR THEIR WINS IN SUBJECT AND GRADE LEVEL COMPETITIONS.   TATE LARSON/SANDUSKY WAS THE RUNNER-UP AND ADAM KRAUSE/MARLETTE WAS AWARDED THE TROPHY FOR CHAMPION OF CHAMPION.

ADAM KRAUSE WAS THE GOLD MEDALIST IN LANGUAGE ARTS AND SENIORS, SILVER MEDALIST IN TECHNOLOGY, AND BRONZE MEDALIST IN THE ARTS AND SCIENCE. ADAM WILL RECEIVE A $250 SCHOLARSHIP FROM THE TAQBL.   HE HAS ENROLLED AT MSU IN THE FALL.

WITH THE AWARDING OF THIRTY-THREE INDIVIDUAL TROPHIES, MARLETTE STUDENTS TOOK HOME ELEVEN WITH BAD AXE EARNING TEN TROPHIES. SANDUSKY STUDENTS WON 5 TROPHIES, BROWN CITY TOOK 4 AND LAKERS, KINGSTON, AND UBLY ALL HAD ONE WIN. STUDENTS FROM PECK, CPS, AND NORTH BRANCH ALSO COMPETED IN THE TOURNAMENT OF CHAMPIONS.
