LAKER THIRD GRADERS CHARLES CSANYI AND KYLE IGNASH WORK ON FINDING THE PIECES THEY NEED TO BUILD THEIR LEGO PROJECT.

LAKER ELEMENTARY'S NEW 18-MEMBER UNDERWATER REMOTE-OPERATED VEHICLE (ROV) TEAM, LEAD BY TEACHERS SARA SMITH AND MARK ESTELLE, STARTED MEETING WEEKLY IN OCTOBER. THE TEAM INCLUDES THIRD THROUGH FIFTH GRADERS. EVENTUALLY, THE STUDENTS WILL BUILD/ENGINEER AN ROV THAT'S DESIGNED TO DO SPECIFIC TASKS, AND THEY WILL TAKE THIS ROV TO A COMPETITION IN THE SPRING TO SEE HOW WELL IT PERFORMS. STUDENTS WILL START WORKING ON THE ROV THIS WINTER, BUT UNTIL THEN, THEY WILL BE WORKING ON PROJECTS TO HELP BUILD THE SKILLS THEY'LL NEED TO CREATE THE ROV. STUDENTS ARE PICTURED PUTTING TOGETHER LEGO DRACTA TECHNIC AND PNEUMATIC SETS, CREATING VARIOUS OBJECTS WITH REAL-WORLD APPLICATIONS, SUCH AS LEVERS AND CRANES.

LAKER JUNIOR HIGH HAS ITS OWN SUCCESSFUL ROV TEAM, WITH TROPHIES, WITH TROPHIES ALREADY ACCUMULATED!
