Biography

Betty Jane Ondrajka, age 80, of Gagetown, passed away December 30, 2014, at Vadavilla AFC Home in Unionville. Betty was born January 5, 1930, in Unionville, to the late Jesse and Edna (Wing) Parsell. On April 11, 1953, she married George Ondrajka, Jr. He preceded her in death on September 16, 1995. She enjoyed gardening, baking homemade bread, making walnut baskets for her grandchildren, her dog, Buddy, watching the Detroit Tigers, reading the newspaper, and spending time with her grandchildren.

Biography

Robert Anthony Ahearn, 78, of Meade Township, passed away suddenly on December 26th at McLaren Bay Regional Hospital in Bay City. He was born in Kinde on January 20, 1936 to the late Edmund J. and Annie J. (Pettie) Ahearn. Robert was united in marriage to Sharon A. McPhee on December 26, 1959 at St. Edward’s Catholic Church in Kinde. Rob graduated from Bad Axe High School in 1953. He worked at Carmet Manufacturing in Bad Axe and owned Bob’s Refrigeration in Kinde. Rob was a dedicated husband, father, and grandfather. He was an avid Detroit Tiger fan and also enjoyed hunting, snowmobiling and playing cards. He was always available for his family and friends.

Alfred James Liedke, 94, former resident of Port Hope, passed away Friday, December 26, 2014 at Courtney Manor in Bad Axe after a long illness. He was born November 22, 1920 in Harbor Beach to the late Frederick O. and Nellie Mae (Bruce) Liedke. Alfred was united in marriage to Esther O. Zick on June 12, 1943 at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Bloomfield Township. He was a farmer until his retirement and moved to Harbor Beach. He was member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Port Hope. Alfred was a 4-H leader for many years, a church elder and a board member of the Davidson School. He was an avid card player and enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Mr. Irvin O’Parka, 81 of Ruth, passed away Thursday, December 25, 2014 at Courtney Manor in Bad Axe. Irvin was born on December 17, 1933 in to the late Bernard and Monica (Spitza) O’Parka. He married Mildred Hammerle on August 30, 1958 at Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Smith Corners. Irvin attended Ubly High School worked on the family farm. He worked for Clarence Stomack’s Greenview Farms for 30 years. He also did road construction for a few years. Irvin then worked for Al Hanson Motors from 1992 until he retired in 2005. He was a former member of the Ruth Knights of Columbus. He bowled for the Parisville Hotel in Minden City. He enjoyed polka music, playing cards, scratch off lotto cards and making homemade wine.

FAY I. BRAUN, age 92 of Ruth, passed away Wednesday, December 24, 2014 at Autumnwood Nursing Center of Deckerville. She was born on July 29, 1922 in Sherman Township to the late Edwin and Mellissa (Anderson) Dore. Fay and Bernard Braun were united in marriage on November 18, 1947. He preceded her in death on March 13, 2005. Together they had a Milk Hauling route from 1957 to 1995, and also transported water to the shoreline residents. Fay was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church of Ruth, and the Christian Mothers. She enjoyed needle point, cards, babysitting, and bowling.

Mrs. Shirley M. Holdwick, 78 of Ruth, passed away Tuesday, December 23, 2014 at the Lakeview Extended Care and Rehab Center in Harbor Beach with her loving family by her side. She was born September 13, 1936 in Sherman Township to the late Bernard & Alma (Tenbusch) Emming. On June 16, 1956, Shirley was united in marriage to Leo H. Holdwick at Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Ruth. Shirley was a lifelong parishioner at Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Ruth where she was a member of the Christian Mothers. She worked side by side with her husband on the family farm. She also worked part time for the Ruth Farmer’s Elevator and the Farmer’s Tavern. Shirley enjoyed bowling, quilting, playing euchre, crocheting and baking her famous chocolate chip cookies. Her cookie containers were never allowed to be empty in anticipation of a grandchild coming to visit. Shirley cherished and dearly loved her family.

Brian J. Puterbaugh, 35, of Snover,MI died Tuesday, December 23, 2014 in Gaylord Tendercare Nursing Home, MI after a long battle to recover from injuries sustained in an ATV accident. He was born October 8, 1979 in Cass City, MI to Larry and Denise (Beutler) Puterbaugh. As a young boy, Brian attended Mooretown Brethren In Christ Church and participated in the local 4H club. He graduated from Cass City High School 1998. After high school, Brian studied Agricultural Science at Michigan State University. Brian was a lifelong farmer, raising beef cattle and crop farming. He was an outdoorsman and enjoyed fishing and hunting deer and pheasant. In his spare time, Brian enjoyed shooting pool, tractor pulling and camping.

She was politically active with the Democratic Party involving Jimmy Carter, on the Hamtramck Common Council in 1978, was an active member of the Our Lady Queen of Apostles Catholic Church in Hamtramck, a member of the church choir, was youth director for the Polish National Alliance, was a member of the VFW Auxiliary, the Port Hope AmVets Auxiliary, the Red Hat Society, the Port Hope Sexy Senioritas, and the Harbor Beach Lioness Club.

Gerhard “Gary” W. Goebel, age 101, resident of Bad Axe and former resident of Port Austin, passed away December 22, 2014 at Huron Medical Care Facility. Mr. Goebel was born June 26, 1913 in Bach, Michigan to the late Theodore and Lydia (Errer) Goebel. Gerhard was united in marriage to Dorothy Anne Goslin on October 24, 1942 at St. Agatha Catholic Church in Gagetown. They were married for 55 years before she preceded him in death on June 15, 1998. He attended Berne Lutheran School and Pigeon School. He was a member of St. Columbkille Catholic Church at Sheridan Corners and a former member of St. Michael’s Parish in Port Austin. He was also a life member of the Knights of Columbus. In 1954, Gerhard and his wife Dorothy, opened the Goebel Motors Sales & Service in Port Austin and retired in 1975 and then continued to work driving cars for Al Hanson Motors until the age of 95. During his lifetime he had several different occupations including, working at a Dodge Main in Hamtramck for 7 years; Packard Motors; security guard at Jellotin Products; serviced juke boxes; Volmer’s Music Company in Pigeon; E.B.C. & Kuppetts Beer Co.; and at Huron Chevrolet with his brother Clarence “Ozzie” Goebel for nine years.

She is survived by her children: Herbert Hebner and his wife Jeanie of Livonia,MI and Ronald Hebner and his friend Diane, of Simpsonville, Kentucky, 7 grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. Eileen was preceded in death by her siblings: Burton Ramsey, Bernetta Coulston, and Dorothy White.

Eileen E. Hebner, age 93 of Harbor Beach, MI, passed away Sunday, December 21, 2014 at Lakeview Extended Care and Rehab Center of the Harbor Beach Community Hospital. She was born on April 18, 1921 in Harbor Beach, MI to the late Delbert and Anna (Smith) Ramsey. Eileen and R. Jay Hebner were united in marriage on August 23, 1941 in Kalkaska, MI. He preceded her in death on April 7, 1989. Eileen worked at Huron Laundry in Harbor Beach and Murray’s Dress Shop in Bad Axe, MI. She enjoyed music and enjoyed playing the piano for friends and family.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Harold (Alice) and his sister, Dorothy (Walter) Korleski.

Biography

Ronald J. Knoblock, 79, of Bad Axe, died Sunday, December 21, 2014 at the Huron County Medical Care Facility in Bad Axe. He was born on September 21, 1935 in Port Austin, son of the late Floyd and Helen (Korleski) Knoblock. He married Clare Bernard on May 18, 1963 at Resurrection Ascension Church in Long island, New York. Ron graduated from Port Austin High School in 1953. After graduation he served in the U.S. Army and upon returning home owned/operated the Knoblock Shell Station while working on the family farm with his dad. He was a Huron County Commissioner for 10 years and worked for the Human Development Commission in Caro for 18 years in the Weatherization Department until his retirement. To keep himself busy after retiring he worked as a Crossing Guard for the City of Bad Axe. Ron was a loving husband and father that enjoyed hunting, fishing, and bowling. He was an avid sports fan, especially when it came to the “Tigers” and “Lions”. He played softball for many years for the Schlitz team as their catcher where he donned his nickname “Peaches”. He loved playing cards, especially euchre, with his family. He was an active member of St. Hubert’s Catholic Church (Sacred Heart), serving as an Usher. He cherished his family. His big heart and sense of humor will be missed by all who knew him.

Biography

Lyle J. Albrecht, 79 of Bay Port, passed away Saturday, December 20, 2014 at Courtney Manor in Bad Axe. Born on March 19, 1935 at his parent’s family farm in Bay Port, he was the son of Mose and Mary (Gunden) Albrecht. He attended the Kilmanagh School, and graduated in 1953 from Pigeon High School. On May 6, 1961 he was united in marriage to Alice M. Hoffman in Pigeon. In his earlier years, Lyle enjoyed playing all sports, especially fast pitch softball. He enjoyed watching both professional as well as collegiate sports, but especially enjoyed watching his family play all of their sports. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, and especially loved spending time with his family. His family was very important to him. Lyle was a member of Michigan Avenue Mennonite Church, Pigeon.

Shirley Ann Fleming, 80, formerly of Bad Axe passed away peacefully on December 18, 2014 at her home in Algonac. Shirley was born on March 10, 1934 to the late Melvin and Lillian (Cook) Dove in St. Clair County. She was united in marriage to Henry (Hank) J. Fleming on July 11, 1959. They were together for nearly 52 years before he passed away on February 19, 2011. Shirley enjoyed crafting, making quilts, baking, and sewing. She was a great cook, loved to polka dance with Hank and travel.

Mr. Randy Joseph Peruski, 51 of Ubly, passed away Tuesday, December 16, 2014 from a long term illness at home with his loving family by his side while under hospice care. Randy was born on April 8, 1963 in Bad Axe to Stanley and Lorraine (Volmering) Peruski. He married Barbara Grifka on July 7, 1990 at St. John Catholic Church in Ubly. He was a dedicated farmer all of his life and took great pride in everything he did. He loved to be outside and take care of his animals. Randy was well known in the farming community and made so many friends in his lifetime. He was a kind and caring man who would do anything for anyone. Randy cherished spending time with his family and friends and will be greatly missed by those whose lives he touched during his time here on earth.

Shirley Jane Leppek, 76, formerly of Bad Axe, passed away on December 15, 2014 in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Shirley was born on April 9, 1938 to the late George and Helen (Hill) Greyerbiehl in Bad Axe. She married Raymond Donald Leppek on August 20, 1955 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Bad Axe. They were married for fifty one years before he passed away on September 21, 2006. Shirley was a devout Catholic, reading the Bible and prayed the rosary regularly. She also enjoyed spending time outdoors, going for walks and loved reading. She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends.

Hass November 7, 1998 in Cass City. He died December 20, 2007. Helen was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Cass City for over 46 years. She worked for Higby’s Pharmacy in Bad Axe as a clerk from 1955 to 1967. Helen was a member of the Cass City VFW Post #3644 Auxiliary. Over the years Helen enjoyed flower gardening, reading, skating, and dancing.

Judith Fleming Lesock, 81, of Caseville died suddenly Sunday, December 14, 2014 at Scheurer Hospital in Pigeon. Judy was born May 31, 1933 in Pinnebog to the late Charles Jay and Mildred Jane (Varney) Fleming. She graduated from Elkton High School in 1950 and then attended Central Michigan University. She graduated from Henry Ford Hospital School of Nursing in 1954. On July 1, 1955 she married Dr. William John Lesock of Lakewood, Ohio at St. Steven Catholic Church in River Rouge. He preceded her in death on October 22, 1998. Judy worked as a registered nurse at Henry Ford and Beaumont Hospitals before remaining at home to raise her family. In 1988 she retired to Ponte Vedra, Florida where she became involved with the PGA Tour for 10 years. After her husband’s death she returned to the Thumb, settling in Caseville. She was a member of the Caseville United Methodist Church and their altar society, Caseville Eagles Auxiliary, Henry Ford Hospital Alumni Assoc., Alpha Sigma Tau Sorority, an active volunteer at Helping Hand Thrift Store, and a former member of the Board of Directors of the Mount Clemens Symphony Orchestra.
