Michael’s passing was preceded by his grandparents, John James Stanley, Walter and Martha Wineman Jr., Arthur Noll, and John Edward Duso; and his aunt, Mary Ann Duso.

Biography

It is with profound sorrow that we announce the sudden passing of our beloved Michael Andrew Wineman. Michael was born on May 27th, 1986 at Huron Memorial Hospital in Bad Axe, Michigan, and passed away from a brain aneurysm on May 6th, 2013 at his home in Raleigh, North Carolina, formerly of Pigeon. Michael, often referred to as “Mikey,” was well known for his infectious smile, a carefree attitude and a straightforward personality which left an indelible mark on each person that he met. Michael was also a prolific, self-taught amateur guitarist whose style was wrought with heavy blues and rock influences mirrored after legendary guitarists Stevie Ray Vaughn, Jimmy Page, and Adam Jones. As a very young boy, Michael had numerous aspirations, perhaps none so strong as his desire to become “seal trainer” at that young age. This desire blossomed from his natural affinity for the water and the outdoors, where he would spend the majority of his time with the entirety of his large and extended family. As Michael developed into a young man he attended Elkton, Pigeon, Bay Port High School where he played Varsity Soccer, Track, and Tennis earning his High School diploma in 2004. Michael attended college, graduating in 2010 from Western Michigan University with a Bachelor’s degree in Business Management. Following his graduation Michael made the bold decision to relocate away from his home state to North Carolina near his two older brothers, Nick and Matt. There, he quickly became Assistant Manager at the Sweet Tomatoes restaurant in Cary, North Carolina. It was in North Carolina that Mike formulated his plan to earn his doctorate in Physical Therapy which sadly he would never be able to complete. However, all of this was only possible due to Michael’s second lease on life. In 1994 when Mike was eight years old, long before his move to North Carolina, he was diagnosed with Aplastic Anemia, a blood disorder where the bone marrow in the body does not produce enough red cells, white cells, or platelets. If left untreated, he would have died from hemorrhage, infection, or multiple organ failure over a short and painful period of months. Even then, it was a fluke that Michael was diagnosed so early. He had a bruise on his side about the size of an egg and fingerprint bruises on his arms from wrestling with his older brothers. Dr. Kala Reddy of Scheurer Hospital in Pigeon was quick to diagnose the blood disorder and immediately referred Mike to University of Michigan Medical Center. After searching both the United States and European bone marrow registries, since no one in his family was a match, a donor was found in Germany. Michael Lambrecht, a resident of Kronau was willing to provide his bone marrow to a complete stranger in a foreign country, not knowing if the recipient was male or female, adult or child, or even the medical problem that necessitated the bone marrow transplant. Luckily, the bone marrow implanted successfully and Mike was able to live the remainder of his life thanks to the generosity of Michael Lambrecht and his family in Germany. Anonymity between Mike and his donor was maintained for one year and after that time, both parties consented to release their contact information. When he was twelve years old, Mike was able to meet Michael Lambrecht and his family, and every year after that Mike kept in contact with them. In the end, Mike’s family in Germany gave him the greatest gift of all, Life. While no single characterization can encompass Mikey’s life, there are several words that can attempt to represent him: Survivor, Musician, Hunter, Uncle, Backpacker, Sportsman, and Socialite. While each of these depictions describes a part of Mikey, perhaps the best and most important aspect of his life was how he handled relationships. As one of the most caring, good, and kind people that you would ever meet, Michael treated each and every relationship that he forged with a care and understanding that had very few peers. His ability to connect and brighten each individual life that he touched was truly unique. Everyone who knew Michael loved him and will mourn his tragic passing. Michael was the loving and beloved son of Christine Elizabeth Knoblock and her husband Judge M. Richard Knoblock of Port Austin, and his father, James Martin Wineman and his wife Sally Marie Wineman of North Fort Myers, Florida. He was the beloved brother of Major Nicholas Ryan Wineman, USMC and his wife Amina Ahmad Wineman of Beaufort, North Carolina, and Matthew James Wineman, and his fiancé Amanda Taylor of Trenton, North Carolina.
